Recently,Prof. Yuan Huang from Department of Pharmaceutics, School of Pharmacy has been invited to write a review for Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, which is an authoritative journal for review articles in the field of drug delivery. This review was available online on 7th October (DOI : 10.1016/j.addr.2017.10.001).
The aim of Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews is to provide a forum for the critical analysis of advanced drug and gene delivery systems. Editors have recently invited several specialists to participate the theme issue named “Technological strategies to overcome mucus barrier in mucosal drug delivery”. Prof. Huang’s group contributed an article with the tentative title “Engineering nanomaterials to overcome the mucosal barrier by modulating surface properties”. This review introduced the properties of mucus, discussed the strategies to overcome mucus barrier (e.g., mucus-disrupting, mucus penetrating and mucoadhesive strategies) and reviewed the surface modification methods to simultaneously overcome mucus and epithelium barriers. References in this review included recent researches from Huang’s lab, namely novel core-shell nanoparticles, virus-mimicking lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles, etc.
